Traffic fatalities surged to 42,915 in 2021 in the U.S. following an earlier steep rise in 2020, eliciting more calls for faster action on new safety technologies including vehicle sensors and wireless connections to traffic command centers and other vehicles and roadside infrastructure.
The closing general session on July 20 will discuss how the role of vehicle-to-everything, or V2X, technology can contribute to school bus safety. Speaking will be Peter Ashley, who is the director of business development for Applied Information of Alpharetta, Georgia.
Applied Information and other companies demonstrated technology recently in the Atlanta area that sends a direct signal from a school bus with its stop sign extended to approaching vehicles.
Audi’s work with C-V2X technology includes developing tools that inform drivers about the likes of upcoming traffic jams or road work. Now, Audi wants to see a future where drivers are alerted to stopped school buses or emergency vehicles, both of which often come to a stop unexpectedly to pick up or drop off individuals.
On May 12, the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) will organise a workshop on “C-V2X: Ready to Deploy”, bringing together infrastructure owners and operators and the broader ecosystem stakeholders to disclose the benefits of C-V2X for traffic safety. The workshop will be followed in the afternoon by a series of live C-V2X technology demonstrations.
